Pupil Premium

At Altofts Junior School we recognise that all pupils, regardless of their background, should have equal access to a curriculum that will enable them to reach their potential.

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, funding which is additional to the main school budget, is the best way to address some of the underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals and their peers.  The funding is aimed to tackle disadvantage and to reach the children who need it most.

Children who qualify for Pupil Premium funding include:

  • those who have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years;
  • children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months;
  • children of armed service personnel.

Measures are included in performance tables of results that capture the achievement of pupils eligible for free school meals and therefore covered by the Pupil Premium.

In our school,  we ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all groups of pupils. We assess and address the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils and ensure that appropriate provision is made for those who belong to vulnerable groups.  In making this provision, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged and we also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals.  The DFE states that "It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility", therefore we allocate our funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has identified as being socially disadvantaged.
